Paraquat dichloride 24 SL is a non-selective, broad-spectrum, contact herbicide that controls weeds and grasses by rapidly damaging their cell membranes and cytoplasm. The “24 SL” indicates it is a soluble liquid formulation containing 24% of the active ingredient, Paraquat dichloride. It is used for pre-plant and post-emergence directed applications in crops like potatoes, cotton, and rubber, and for burndown in non-crop areas, but it must not contact the foliage of desirable crops to avoid severe damage.  

How it Works
  • Contact Action: It acts quickly on contact with the leaves and foliage of weeds. 
  • Mode of Action: During photosynthesis, the herbicide generates superoxide, a process that damages cell membranes and cytoplasm, leading to rapid desiccation and death of the weed. 
  • Limited Translocation: While it has some translocation in the xylem, its action is primarily contact-based. 
Applications
  • Pre-plant Application: Used before planting crops to clear fields of weeds. 
  • Post-Emergence Directed Spray: Applied to the weeds between crop rows or after the crop has emerged.
